LE PAGE.—Il y est venu avec des fleurs pour les jeter sur le tombeau de la signora, et il m'a ordonné de me tenir à l'écart: je lui ai obéi. Dans ce moment, un homme avec une torche est venu pour ouvrir le monument; et bientôt après mon maître s'est élancé sur lui l'épée à la main: alors j'ai couru avertir la garde.

LE PRINCE.—Cette lettre confirme le récit du religieux: elle contient le récit de leurs amours, les nouvelles qu'il a reçues de la mort de Juliette: il dit qu'il a acheté du poison d'un pauvre apothicaire, et qu'il est venu à ce monument pour y mourir et reposer auprès de Juliette.—Où sont ces deux ennemis, Capulet, Montaigu?—Voyez quelle verge s'est étendue sur vos haines. Le ciel a trouvé le moyen de détruire votre bonheur par l'amour; et moi, pour avoir fermé les yeux sur vos querelles, j'ai perdu deux parents. Nous sommes tous punis.

CAPULET.—O mon frère Montaigu, donne-moi ta main; ce sera le douaire de ma fille: je ne peux rien te demander de plus.

MONTAIGU.—Et moi je puis te donner davantage, car je ferai élever sa statue en or pur, et tant que Vérone sera connue sous ce nom, nulle statue n'approchera du prix de celle de la tendre et fidèle Juliette.

CAPULET.—Roméo, aussi riche que son épouse, reposera près d'elle: chétives expiations de nos inimitiés!

LE PRINCE.—L'aurore de ce jour apporte avec elle une sombre paix, et de douleur le soleil a caché son visage. Sortez de ce lieu, et allez vous entretenir de ces tristes aventures. Quelques-uns auront leur pardon, quelques-uns aussi seront punis, car il n'y eut jamais une histoire plus douloureuse que celle de Juliette et de son Roméo.
