The Boston Gazette pointed out the perceived implications of the Mansfield decision for any slave owner contemplating taking a slave to England:
“June 22. A Correspondent observes, that as Blacks are free now in this country [England], Gentlemen will not be so fond of bringing them here as they used to be, it being computed that there are about 14000 blacks in this country.” Given the press coverage of the ruling and its possible significance, as well as the local connection to Boston of Somerset and his master, Mansfield’s judgement was the talk of the town and would have been known to Wheatley either in print or by word of mouth.
