Geech held her tightly then led her out to the car, knowing that he had to be the strong one and send her on her way even though he wanted nothing more than for her to stay. He opened the driver’s side and helped her in. When she closed the door and started the engine, she rolled down the window and stared at him lovingly. “How can I ever repay you?”

 

“By being happy,” Geech smiled.

 

“Will I ever see you again?” she asked sadly.

 

“We don’t know what the future will hold. But for now, go off and start that new life that you and your sister want for yourselves. And maybe once you get settled and things calm down around here, we’ll cross paths again.”

 

“I love you,” Lily said before leaning out and kissing Geech deeply.

 

“I love you, too,” Geech said as he himself fought back tears.

 

And with that, he watched as Lily pulled out of the garage and headed down the street toward her future. His phone buzzed, and he looked down and saw a text from Chase. It read, “On the way back now, laughing all the way. Cops think it was just a false alarm. But all is well. Oh, and by the way, I left an untraceable cell phone inside of Lily’s car for her with your new cell phone number stored in it. Yours is on the kitchen table at the hideout, and her new number is stored in it. Now you two can keep in touch in secret. Don’t ever say that your brother isn’t always looking out for you. See you soon.”

 

Geech grinned wildly then ran into the house to grab his phone and call Lily so that she’d know she had a new phone. On the way there, he thought about her and the possibility of them ever having a future together. While he knew that only time would tell, he felt in his heart that the odds were definitely in their favor.
