Iedere komende, iedere vertrekkende lente roepe u die vermaning voor den geest terug; en zoo gij aan die waarschuwende stem het oor leent, dan zult gij later niet vruchteloos op eenen gezegenden herfst hopen, en gij zult in de eeuwige lente rijpe en vele vruchten medebrengen.

Het verwelken van de lente verwekt allezins een weemoedig gevoel in ons hart.

Wanneer men zooveel schoons en heerlijks, dat onze zinnen en ons gemoed even sterk aantrekt en met reine vreugde vervult, ziet verdwijnen, hoe zou het anders kunnen, of een zoodanig verlies moet smartelijke gewaarwordingen bij ons doen oprijzen? Wij reikhalzen immers zoo langen tijd naar de lente, waren zoo regt verblijd, toen zij eindelijk met haren bloesem en liederen tot ons gekomen was, zoodat wij nu wel reden tot droefheid hebben, wanneer zij ons wederom gaat verlaten, dewijl met haar zoo veel lieflijks voor ons verloren gaat, en wij ons tot eenen langen, somberen, kouden winter moeten voorbereiden, alvorens wij haar andermaal mogen begroeten.

Diezelfde smartelijke gewaarwording, mijne lieven, welke gij gevoelt, wanneer de lente afscheid van u neemt, diezelfde, zeg ik, zult gij ook dan ondervinden, wanneer uwe gelukkige jeugd achter u ligt. Ja, zelfs zal zij nog veel smartelijker zijn! Elk jaar keert de lentetijd terug; maar de lente van ons leven, onze jeugd, eens voorbijgevlogen zijnde, is voor altijd verdwenen. Geniet haar daarom met een vrolijk en onbezorgd hart, geniet haar in volle maat, smaakt al dat genoegen wat zij ons kon verschaffen! Maar geniet haar tevens op eene verstandige wijze, opdat gij later[88] zonder berouw en met onverdeeld genoegen aan haar kunt terugdenken, wanneer gij in latere jaren uw meeste geluk in de herinnering aan vroegere tijden zult moeten zoeken.

Maar de vertrekkende lente verwekt ook eene vrolijke aandoening in het hart van den mensch, wanneer hij ten minste niet al zijne hoop en vrolijke verwachtingen op aardsche belangen heeft gesteld, maar deze hem boven het stof en de nietigheid van de aarde, waarop hij zich als een gast, als een vreemdeling beschouwt, naar zijne blijvende woonplaats opvoeren.

"Moge de eene lente voor, de andere na verwelken en ons verlaten," zoo spreekt de ware Christen, "moge het jeugdige voorkomen van het ligchaam en het leven verdwijnen; wat kan mij dit deren? Ik ken het land, alwaar jeugd en lente eeuwig bloeijen, en weet, dat eene liefderijke hand daar eene plaats voor mij heeft bereid, die niemand mij kan ontrooven, indien ik hier op aarde mijne jeugd zóó besteed heb, als ik haar moest besteden, wilde ik niet dor en onvruchtbaar naar het andere vaderland vertrekken. Daarom mag ik ook niet treuren, vooral den moed niet laten varen, omdat het schoone zoo snel verdwijnt, omdat de wintertijd in de natuur en in mijn leven zoo spoedig aanwezig is!"

Zóó spreekt de Christen, en zoo moet hij spreken; omdat deze aarde, waar alles vergankelijk is, op welke de lente slechts eene snel voorbijgaande verschijning is, hem, zooals hij vast en zeker weet, wel voor eenigen tijd, maar niet voor altijd tot woonplaats is aangewezen.
