About the same time, I plunged back into the world of Apollinaire commentary and found that some marvelous discoveries had been made over the past few decades. Still I was not interested in creating a standard, expected, balanced selection, one that would require the inclusion of poems I did not want to translate. One such poem, one of his most well known, was “La Chanson du mal-aimé,” a long work I had avoided for years. It had always seemed fussy and obscure. One day, for a reason I no longer recall, I forced myself to read it again, and suddenly I found myself doing a decent translation of the first two stanzas. Then I caught fire and spent most of the next week making a first draft. Not only that, I realized what an exciting and wonderfully crazy poem it is. How had I missed this all along?

However, there remained several other poems that Apollinairians revere but that do not resonate for me. I can’t “hear” them in English
